Medical Director

Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership, direction and functional expertise on complex projects and initiatives for the Order's Life Underwriting and New Business.
  • Responsible for providing leadership and medical expertise for medical underwriting of cases in the Individual Life insurance area.
  • Provide strategic oversight of cases and provide medical expertise to the underwriters. Medical expertise and consultative services to Life Underwriting and other stakeholders within the Clients.
  • Provides functional expertise on complex projects and reinsurance initiatives for Client Life Underwriting and New Business.
  • Responsible for providing strategic leadership and medical expertise in the application of medical impairment risk evaluation, mortality assessments for medical underwriting of cases in the Individual Life insurance area.
  • Reviews medical underwriting cases utilizing statistical methodology to interpret and analyze provided information and determine an overall mortality assessment.
  • Works with Actuarial and Marketing to provide support on new product development and initiatives.
  • Provides strategic oversight on cases and provides medical expertise to the underwriters, director of underwriters and chief underwriter when needed.
  • Facilitates recording and reporting of confidential medical information.
  • Supports chief underwriter with all legal and compliance matters and state and Canadian audits.
  • Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments, trends, assess the impact, collaborate with senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future strategies.
  • Designs and delivers medical training for the underwriting team to provide best practices and emerging trends to meet business imperatives.
  • Provide medical information/decision-making in a variety of settings as Medical Director. Serve as a very experienced individual contributor and provides functional guidance to life underwriters, claim department and less experienced medical staff, assist the chief underwriter and director of underwriters in more complex/sensitive cases along with mentoring and training.
  • Supports claim department on contestable claim review and decision process, review qualification decision for chronic illness rider and accelerated death benefit along with review of the medical withdrawal option/decision for Annuity department.
  • Responsible for annual review and updating of our client medical guidelines, producing the quarterly and annual medical Directors report.
  • Participate in product development discussions with field management and actuarial to provide feedback from a Medical/Underwriting point of view. Collaborate with Product actuaries to design underwriting programs for special products (e.g. Streamlined or Simplified Underwriting programs).
  • Evaluate mortality results and other experience studies to identify root cause of results and look for trends. Represent our client's position with reinsurers on underwriting topics of interest (e.g. changes to the Underwriting manuals/procedures, preferred risk evaluation, special programs on facultative business, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Industry designations such as CLU, FLMI & FALU.
  • Management experience of at least 5 years.
  • Thorough knowledge of life insurance products, offerings and industry experience.
  • Strong proven technical risk assessment skills to include the evaluation of medical history, physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, etc.
  • Well-developed knowledge of reinsurance practices and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of current medical standards and practices for life insurance underwriting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and health metrics and physiology to make a risk assessment.
  • Able to interpret EKG results.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and Canadian insurance regulations.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Management skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Systems and Technical Knowledge
  1. INGENIUM, AWD is desirable.
  2. Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  3. Experience with underwriting applications for information systems.

Education
  • Undergraduate degree.
  • Graduate of accredited Medical School with MD or DO required.
  • MD preferred over DO.

Experience
  • 10 plus years of Medical Experience in Life Insurance Underwriting.

Licensing / Certification
  • Medical License preferred in state of employment.
  • Industry designations such as CLU, FLMI & FALU also preferred, not required.
