Performance Test Engineer

The role of the Performance Test Engineer is to design, develop, execute, monitor, analyze and maintain performance test scripts and test solutions for various types of applications and platforms. To fulfill this role individual applies appropriate performance automation technologies to meet the short and long term goals of the testing organization. A understanding of different technologies is required for a Performance Test Engineer; as well as a growing willingness to learn new tools and technologies. Expectations for the role include solving problems related to the use and implementation of performance test automation tools, collaborating with appropriate technical teams to complete root cause analysis and providing comprehensive reports and deliverables summarizing all performance automation testing findings and results. This is a senior level position requiring strong technical and analytical skills with an expectation to provide informal leadership and subject matter expertise to work teams.

Responsibilities
  • Provides expertise with performance testing procedures, guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Develops effective performance test performance automation scripts using performance tools and techniques to simulate large enterprise environments, such as Client Loadrunner, Jmeter, Gatling, or similar tools.
  • Works collaboratively with cross-functional teams to understand project objectives, gather performance automation requirements, design automated tests, troubleshoot issues, and implement scalable performance test automation solutions.
  • Collaborates with operations staff to set up and configure system and application level performance monitors
  • Interfaces with test tool administrators to coordinate the use of Performance Center resources.
  • Works closely with business analysts, solution architects, developers and operations team to design performance automation for the validation of load and performance requirements.
  • Communicates resource impacts, provide estimates and dependencies to the project team.
  • Analyzes test results and provides comprehensive reporting on Network, Application and System performance.
  • Works closely with operations team to correlate test results with physical layer event logging.
  • Works closely with solution architects, developers and operations team to log defects for performance requirements that are not met, identify performance degradation against previous baselines and pinpoint other potential bottlenecks.
  • Establishes and maintains baseline test runs for multiple systems and applications in various test environments.
  • Identifies opportunities to drive and contribute beyond team commitments.
  • Participates in performance automation script code reviews and provide high-level guidance on their compliance with performance test automation best practices.
  • Develops and monitors test metrics and provide timely communication to key stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Coordinates various test-related activities for project delivery; identifying task dependencies, test schedules, creation of test data and utilization of test environments.
  • Works to remain an active learner in all performance automation technologies related to software, web and mobile applications testing.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.
  • Performs other functions as assigned by management.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant field and 6+ years of related work experience.
  • 3+ years of experience which includes strong performance testing in Open Source tools jmeter or gatling).
  • Experience with a variety of protocols such as: Web, SOA and Java.
  • 2+ years of experience in developing in a Java based test performance automation framework.
  • 2+ years of experience using one or more performance monitoring tools (Dynatrace, Splunk, New Relic etc)
  • 2+ years of experience in integrating performance scripts with Jenkins

Strongly Preferred skills
  • Experience with maven, git and continuous integration systems using Jenkins
  • Prior experience with Spock, Selenium and other automation testing tools
  • Detailed understanding of test environment configuration and scaling in order to design tests that are proportionately aligned with larger scale Production environments.
  • Insightful and logical problem isolation and solving skills.
  • Results driven and goal-oriented.
  • Ability to perform in a very focused and methodical manner with good time management/multi-tasking skills.
  • Able to independently adapt and thrive through change.
  • Strong understanding of Object Oriented concepts.
  • Experience with distributed systems concepts.
  • Ability to participate on projects individually.

Nice to have skills
  • Mobile app testing processes, tools, and methodology.
  • Experience with project management methodologies including agile methodologies and supporting techniques (e.g. Test Driven Development and continuous integration processes), packaged system implementations, and traditional specification-driven approaches.
  • Knowledge of performance automation framework concepts and performance automation best practices.
